Midland Cross Country Championships – Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.
Saturday 25th January 2020
Upon entering the field at Prestwold Hall, it was clear that it was going to be a tough and muddy day. The weather was chilly with a cold wind blowing across the site and the tent pegs sunk into the ground almost under their own weight. With the tent erected, the club flag flying high and the athletes primed and ready to do battle, the day was ready to start.
First race of the day was the U13 girls with seven athletes competing for the club. Zineb Zbirou (13th) led our team home closely followed by Isabelle Smith (33rd), Thea Oakley (35th) and Olivia Willison (37th) providing NAC with the first medal of the day, with Bronze in the team competition. Other wonderful performances from this age group included Mariam Zbirou (50th), Katie Enefer (60th) and Emily Langley (106th)
The second race of the day saw the U13 boys trying to emulate the girl’s performance and with Ollie Walls (17th), Lewis Robson (25th), Benjamin Westmorland-Alexander (27th) and Malachy Collins (28th), the team took the silver medal. A further 6 athletes ran and supported this team result and they were Kai Scott (37th), Lewis Nutt (76th), Freddie Caspall (86th), Jacob Archer (88th), Lewis Fyfe (93th), William Gardiner (125th), all turning in great performances. Special mention to Lewis Fyfe who really wasn’t at all well on the day but was still determined to do his bit.
Third race was the U15 girls which due to various injuries of athletes meant that we had no runners on the day, therefore the U15 boy’s race was the next opportunity for NAC to shine. A team of seven athletes raced over a worsening course, including Ryan Croft (75th), Dilane Nyangang (77th), Joshua Robson (83rd), Aidan McFadden (84th), Oli Cherrington (96th), Oliver Rose (110th) and Henry Westley (116th)
Four NAC athletes enjoyed the U17 Women’s race, with Isabelle Rippon (30th), Elysia Lay (67th), Holly Walker (74th) and Isobel Haynes (76th). Enjoyed may not be the correct word in this case, probably endured would be better.
The U17 Men had four runners on the day with Matthew Blomley (26th) finishing first of the bunch, with Isaac Cherrington (51st) and Tom McFadden (52nd) finishing together, with George Thompson (67th) completing the line-up.
………. And to the final races of the day and an opportunity for our seasoned athletes to show the youngsters how it was done. First for the Senior Ladies was Barbara Willison (77th) romping home in excellent style and Judith Rose (114th) following in. Great performances from both ladies over a tough 5-mile course.
Final race was for the Senior Men, now running over a well-trodden 7.5-mile course including three attempts at a stiff uphill section. Ed Wise (136th) led the NAC team home with Adil Zbirou (263rd), Adam Alexander (321st) and Mark Haynes (323rd) following close behind.
Accepting that the two U13 teams both achieved team medals, there was a wonderful atmosphere around the camp with all athletes putting in a good shift on a tricky course.
